Hard Landscaping 

Hard Landscaping(the use of inert construction materials) includes patios, driveways and sidewalks. We are skilled in the use of natural flagstone as well as interlocking brick for these applications. 

We specialize in ‘Quilting’, the use of more than one hard surface material to create interesting patterns, colors and textures that liven up your patio, walkway or driveway. They become works of art, as well as being practical and functional.

We have experience in both precast concrete products as well as natural stone in the construction of outdoor steps, terraces, landings and retaining walls. Once again, practical can also be beautiful!

Our Landscape Construction division uses a variety of natural stone products in our waterfall and pond projects. Here we often combine Waterfall Rock, Drywall Stone and Riverstone for constructing, lining and edging the water features. These materials provide interesting contrasts in shape, texture and mass as well as providing structural integrity.

Large accent boulders and rock groupings are used in our Rock Gardens. The contrast of size and shape becomes important here. Boulders and rock groupings are also used as landscape focal points in planting beds.

We work with the pallettes of wood and iron creating fences, arbors, trellises, pergolas, gazebos and other landscape structures. Each of these Hard Landscaping materials has its own charracter and beauty and Folmer Landscape Design and Construction utilizes all of these components to enhance your outdoor living space.

The use of plant materials in landscape construction, ‘Soft Landscaping’, is a key component of our landscaping services. Our education and experience has imparted a wealth of knowledge of plant materials. We are known for our unique and original planting designs that stand up to the test of time. No overplanted jobs that look good for a year or two before becoming a jungle or plantings that fail to thrive because the installed plants were not suitable for that location. We have the knowledge and experience for all your planting needs.

Our landscape design and construction projects have been featured in Canadian Gardening , Harrowsmith and other magazines. We have been featured in David Tarrants book,  Canadian Gardens. Our work has also been televised on Mark Cullen Gardens, the Guerilla Gardener and PBS.

Credentials

The firm's owner, Brian Folmer, has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree, with Distinction, from the University of Guelph. This 5 year Honours Degree teaches the art and science of the design and construction of our outdoor environment. As well, the owner has taken numerous University courses in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Woody and Herbaceous Plants, Soil Science, Botany, Pomology, Apiculture, Nursery Production, Tropical Plants and Forestry. Mr. Folmer also has 26 years of practical experience in the industry.

Our staff have College level training in Landscape Design and Landscape Construction as well as carpentry and general construction methods and techniques.
