New Plant Introductions
We hope you enjoy these and other new introductions too follow, at Folmer Garden Centre.
MORE 'NEW PLANTS’ FOR 2011 Bloomerang Lilac: the first and only ‘Repeat blooming’ Lilac. A first flush of mauve flowers in June, followed by a season long display of blooms - quantity and frequency of bloom dependant on soil fertility and moisture levels. This Lilac is dwarf in stature ( more energy goes into the blooms so less height and width). A great new take on an old favourite. Anticipated availability : late May early June. ‘Quickfire’ Hydrangea : the earliest blooming Pee Gee variety, emerging pale pink and deepening to a deep pink/maroon red color. A great, vigorous plant. Most of the Hydrangeas will arrive mid April . ‘Incrediball’ Hydrangea : monster white snowballs adorn this strong grower midsummer on. Adequate moisture levels determine size and quantity of bloom so give this,as well as the other Hydrangea varieties, good rich, moist soil conditions for best display. ‘Little Lime’ Hydrangea : a dwarf version of ‘Limelight’ with all the color and vigour of its parent, but an easier fit in smaller gardens and tight spaces. Itoh Peonies : hybrids between giant Tree Peonies and Garden Peonies. They display hybrid vigour, have huge blooms in exotic colors ( for peonies) including yellows and purples, and have long lasting blooms. They also mature at a younger age so you don’t need to wait years to see them develop! Our Botanical Garden trial plants were at mature blooming size in 3 seasons with blooms the first season! The availability of growing stock for these peonies has increased too, so the prices have fallen remarkably. Late April/early May arrivals. Hellebore ‘ Red River’ and "Onyx Odyssey’ : beautiful deep reddish/pink and purplish black varieties respectively. Hardy, robust growers, these varieties are arriving with our first perennial shipment of spring - check our Garden Centre schedule of events for dates. New Zealand Flax: fantastic for containers, these multicolored ‘giant spikes’ are becoming much more popualr with exposure! They are ‘hardy tropicals’ ie: thay can take frosts and are easy to overwinter. We put Botanical Garden specimens out in March/April and don’t bring them in until November. So they provide a long season of interest. Many of our customers are starting to use them in containers and overwinter them indoors and therefore you can reuse them - they are a costly plant so you want to keep them around! They are available throughout the season, first arriving mid - April. ‘Knockout’ Roses : these are hardy, disease resistant, no maintenance roses! Sounds impossible, but true. We have moved beyond the basic Red and now also stock Pink, Double Red, Double Pink, Yellow and a bicolor. Tons of care free blooms - the ultimate rose for the low maintenance garden. Quick sell-outs last year. We are hoping to have enough this season. Anticipated arrival : mid to late April. Hardy Lotus - exotic blooms in mixed varieties incl. light pink, dark pink and white. If you have a water garden you really need to have a lotus - a rare and beautiful plant indeed. Blooming size plants arrive the 3rd week in May. Tropical waterlilies - in wild colors like pale and deep purple, these beauties bloom much more heavily than hardy ones. They like heat and full sun - bring indoors in October or when blooming ceases and store in a sunny spot ( in water! ) Worth the effort for the unique colors and masses of blooms that they produce. Arriving the 3rd week in May. Select water plants - a huge selection this year of hardy water plants (and a few tropicals). Water Iris, Cardinal Flower, Striped Rush, Varigated Cattail, Blue and Pink Pickerel Weed , numerous varieties and colors of hardy Waterlily and many more. All the plants you need for a watergarden including floaters, submergents, oxygenators etc etc. All arriving the 3rd week in May. Many more varieties will follow - we will try to post descriptions as they arrive, but in the busy season many of the ‘new plants’ sell out fast, before we can list them. Keep checking in at the Garden Centre throughout the season - there is always ‘something new’ at Folmers Garden Centre!
